How to Guess Ranks in Chess
Chess on GTR uses a move-by-move game replay instead of an esports video. Estimate an Elo rating by looking at the decisions across the game, including missed threats and how advantages are handled.
Consider development, piece activity, tactical awareness and endgame choices. A familiar opening or a single blunder cannot establish a player’s strength.

What Elo ranges does GTR use?
The website uses ten chess rating bands, from below 800 to 2400+. Choose one of the ranges displayed beneath the board.
How does chess rank guessing work?
Replay the moves and choose an Elo rating band. The result compares your estimate with the rating recorded for that game.
Is chess scoring the same as the other games?
On the current website, Classic chess uses rating bands and the same 100/50/0 points as other Classic games. You choose a rating range rather than entering an exact number.
